Trifecta Gallery hosts Pancakes and Spandex?

All I know is that Las Vegas lighting extraordinaire Todd VonBastiaan and his awesome partner Bryan McCarthy are making pancakes. And apparently these pancakes are made of spandex or some other material that is not really edible. In either case they are having breakfast in bed this morning at Marty Walsh's Trifecta Gallery located inside the Arts Factory.

Since I am running late this A.M. I will be stopping by to see what all the batter is about!

Here is a write-up that Marty sent me a few days ago.

HOTCAKES

Pancakes with fur? Spandex? Maybe. You never quite know with Todd Von Bastiaans, especially now that he has joined forces for this project with Bryan McCarthy. The duo spent the last year conceptualizing and producing "Todd and Bryan's Pancake Bed (and Breakfast)." The result is a sensory and magic experience with the ability to launch the viewer into his own interpretation of nostalgic breakfast memories. At Trifecta Gallery we have always been about sensory travel and these guys hit the mark. The individually priced fabricated over-sized pancakes are made from photo optimized recycled fabric, stuffed with what actually feels like real pancake! Some are edged with flashy, furry embellishments not normally associated with pancakes. Use them for yoga mats, floor pillows, a stack for a coffee table, foot rest or just wrap yourself up in it and pretend!

We are inviting YOU to the opening show with a pancake breakfast

This THURSDAY MORNING from 7AM - 10AM join Todd, Bryan, Chef Beni and Trifecta staff for breakfast before you go to work! Plenty of coffee and the unique pleasure of starting your day with food as art and art as food! We do it all the time. Come and see what we mean!

Las Vegas artist Jerry Misko has a party...

There is no artist that embodies Las Vegas as much as Jerry Misko and it truly does take a native to capture the true essence of this radiant city we call home. Inspired by his surroundings Jerry paints the non obvious elements that make up the neon jungle. Not just does he create amazing paintings but he also creates amazing murals. Over the last month Jerry has embarked on a Kickstarter project to fund his latest project, a series of murals that will dot the Downtown landscape.

On Wednesday, June 29 between 7pm to 11pm, Jerry will be having a mural fundraiser to complete his latest project Paint it Black. The event will take place at Vanguard Lounge in the Fremont East Entertainment District. If you want to meet one of Las Vegas's coolest artists make sure you come Downtown!

Electric Daisy Carnival was FABULOUS!!!

Not a great picture but
you get the idea...
The sensory explosion of lights, music, costumes, public art, carnival rides and atmosphere made Friday evening one of the most memorable of my life. Even though I only attended one night of the three day Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) I have to say I never had so much fun at a party. It is without a doubt that Las Vegas is the perfect backdrop for the festival. If we can handle the masses of New Years Eve we can definitely handle a massive electronic music festival.

Though I did get a chance to see the festival grounds on a media tour the day before the event, nothing prepared me for what I was to behold the night I arrived. Walking out of the stands and looking over the panorama shook my scenes. It was if I just walked into a rainbow. The burst of color was overwhelming and the unmistakable sound of bass took over.

As my friends Ernie, Ryan and I streamed down to the festival grounds themselves I was greeted by amazing public art. A bamboo forest of sorts in an grassy area known as the Cosmic Meadow. The very place that hours later I would listen to the awesome sounds of Norwegian electronic stars Royksopp and Englishman Plastikman Richie Hawtin.

Meandering my way around from one area to the next told me I was in for a treat at every corner. Even the masses dressed in costumes, glow-sticks and every lighted toy imaginable was on full display. As an experienced "glowsticker" I was disappointed that I did not bring a pair myself since they are key to the way I dance to electronic music. But I was fortunate enough that a few of the kids that had them let me show them a thing or two when it comes to liquid dancing. Ahhh the memories...

For me, going to the Electronic Daisy Carnival was more of a spiritual journey back in time, a time of my awesome youth that spearheaded my absolute love and adoration for all music created electronically. All I can hope is that Insomniac, the producers of EDC, bring the greatest party on earth back to the greatest city.

Here are a few photo from my trusted I-Phone. They are not great but you will get the idea...

The Electric Daisy Carnival has arrived...

Public Art @
Electric Daisy Carnival
The Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) is in my opinion the single most important music event to hit Las Vegas in its 106 year history. This event also has the potential to change the cultural landscape of this community for many years into the future. Insomniac, the producers of the event have already got the city abuzz and even Las Vegas Mayor Oscar B. Goodman has signed a proclamation declaring this week for EDC. In addition, a portion of ticket sales from the event will go to several non-profits including the Smith Center for the Performing Arts.

As a seasoned connoisseur of electronic music myself, not just does the event bring in the hottest Dj's from around the world but it also teams up with visual artists such as the Flux Foundation to present the pubic with stunning interactive art-work worthy of any museum. Why Las Vegas has not had a music festival of this size and magnitude can be left up for debate, but at least its here, and now we can demonstrate to the world that we too can host a massive electronic music festival like no other.

With almost 200 acts, spanning three amazing and electrifying nights, on six huge stages, amazing public art and carnival rides to boot, EDC will be an event that this city will not easily forget. Touring the facilities yesterday before the gates even open, demonstrated to me that this will be a first class event; no expense has been spared and safety is at the top of the list. It is more than apparent that the crew at Insomniac knows how to put together a party and what they have created at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway is by far a work-of-art.

Just being on the festival grounds made me look back at the amazing parties that I attended in my youth. Ah the days of The Electric Highway Tour 1997 (Las Vegas), Sonic Fusion 1999 (Las Vegas), Nocturnal Wonderland 2000 (Indio), Metropolis 2001 (San Francisco), not to mention the countless Cande Factore AWOL parties thrown by Chad Craig, the G-dfather of the Las Vegas' electronic music scene. Parties such as Monkey Biz, Star Gate, ONE, Devils Night, Blackout, Super Ganektagazoink, The Majic Mysterie Machine, Osmosis and so many more.

With such history, it is no surprise that we are more than ready to party like the big boys. With EDC poised to make an impact, the economic realities cannot be ignored and more importantly this tells me that Las Vegas is not down-and-out but-up-and-ready for anything.

So with all this said I am positive that I and tens of thousands of others, will be treated to a wonderland of sensory stimulation full of music, memories and a lot of fun at the Electric Daisy Carnival...

Stay tuned for my upcoming post about my first night at the festival... Now what to wear?

ATTENTION ALL OUT-OF-TOWN VISITORS PLANNING ON ATTENDING THE FESTIVAL -

Las Vegas is exceptionally hot and dry. Keep hydrated with plenty of water. Pace yourself when drinking alcohol. Just because you are young does not mean you are invincible. Take it from a native, the desert is a harsh environment and she is not forgiving... Be smart, party responsibly and most importantly have a Fabulous time...

First Friday fundraiser @ The Lady Silvia... Downtown's newest lounge...

First Friday, the monthly Downtown arts and culture festival, is having a party and not just any party. The First Friday crew has teamed up with the crew at The Lady Silvia, Downtown's newest urban lounge to have a fundraiser. The fundraiser will be a great opportunity to see The Lady Silvia as its sets sail.

Less then 300 feet from my front door this place will be yet another amazing establishment. Located at Soho Lofts, the grand daddy of the Downtown high-rises, it will be part of the mix that includes Globe Salon and Resnicks Grocery. With all this excitement happening in the real center of the city why go anywhere else?

So please join me as we celebrate First Friday and welcome The Lady Silvia.

Channel 8 talks Arts, Culture & Downtown Renaissance...

If the last 20 years has been about the Las Vegas Strip the next 20 will be about Downtown Las Vegas. With the redevelopment of the Las Vegas Arts District, the Fremont East Entertainment District and the old Union Pacific Railroad Yards the stage is set for a Renaissance that Downtown has yearned for years. I have been witnessing the change first hand and I am very excited to finally see it come into fruition. If Las Vegas is going to have a bright future it will be Downtown and those who live, work and play here that will make it happen.

Over the last several days KLAS Channel 8 has done some great reporting on the state of Downtown. I have linked the segments below. Enjoy!

Flux Foundation sculpture to be unveiled at the Electric Daisy Carnival...

Lets face it the Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) is the biggest event to hit Vegas in years. Heck not even a national rodeo can come close to what a massive electronic music festival can do to a city and put it on the international map. Yes Las Vegas nightclubs have brought out the biggest and hottest Dj's from around the world but nothing compares to tens of thousands of people raving to the pounding beats of the 21st century and beyond. And the best thing about all this excitement... NO DRESS CODE! But I digress.
With Insomniac, the parent company of EDC, descending upon Las Vegas in the next two weeks they have already established themselves as the party to reckon with. By giving away a percentage of tickets sales to local charities and even getting a proclamation from our beloved Mayor Oscar B. Goodman they are determined to make a positive mark in a city that has yearned to have a massive party.

But with all this said EDC is not just a party but it is also an immersive experience of sights and sounds; a music festival, an arts festival, a fashion show, a shamanic journey into hyperspace and so much more. As such the Insomniac crew has commissioned the folks at the Flux Foundation, one of the biggest producers of public art at "Burning Man", to create a sculpture for the event. The BrollyFlock is a "30-foot flock of interactive renegade umbrellas that have flown out of our hands and out of our control. They've discovered their own potential, turning the tables on us: soaking us with water, changing their colors and bursting into flame."

This Saturday the Flux Foundation will be having a salon to discuss the installation of the BrollyFlock umbrellas, and a brief presentation of the organizations collaborative works. I for one will not be missing this special event and I highly recommend that all of you come out and support these creative artists and give them a huge Vegas welcome.

About the Flux Foundation and their project -

We hope you join us for this evening of building new relationships, sharing ideas and lighting up the night with brollies. The Flux Foundation was formed to build the Temple at Burning Man 2010. In just three months, more than 250 volunteers designed, built, and burned five mountains that provided physical and spiritual shelter for event participants. The Flux Foundation has continued to deliver innovative, collaborative work across the country. Flux has brought hundreds of artists together to collaborate on installations experienced by more than 200,000 people.

This month, we are bringing our newest creation, BrollyFlock, to Las Vegas to be shown at the Electric Daisy Carnival. We are excited about sharing our work with the Las Vegas community. At this salon, we’ll give you a preview of some of BrollyFlocks interactive effects, including our adorable brollies on fire, and we’ll engage in a lively discussion about how how to build art through community and build community through art.

The Flux Foundations mission is to engage people in designing and building large-scale public art as a catalyst for education, collaboration and empowerment.

Casual Sex TONIGHT at Artifice... It's so Delicious...

A little bit of House Music never hurt anyone has it? I love House Music and I love the vibe that it brings to any environment in which it invades. With the Downtown Renaissance in full swing many of the local establishments have embraced the art form that had its beginnings just after the Disco era in Chicago. True House Heads love the sultry, funky, vocal four-on-the-floor beats that define one of the most important music movements of the late 20th century. So with a little history behind us, this evening my good friend and neighbor Steve Christmas will be demonstrating that he too is a House Head by spinning some awesome beats at Artifice Bar, 18b's newest establishment.
